Why does every AAC app look like medical equipment?

Many established AAC apps use clinical-looking interfaces: gray chrome, dense grids, institutional blue. The reason has more to do with how they are bought than with how they were designed.

This matters because an AAC app is used in public — at a counter, in a waiting room, across a restaurant table. An app that visibly reads as medical equipment can make some people more reluctant to open it in front of strangers.

Why this is not a cosmetic question

Some AAC users describe this concern themselves in community forums — a recurring phrasing is simply *"I feel embarrassed when I use my communication tools."*

The practical risk is non-use. Someone reluctant to take the app out will go without saying the thing, or fall back to gestures and guessing. A capable app does not help while it stays in a pocket.

Why they all look this way

  • Symbol sets are standardized for unambiguous recognition. Clarity is the design goal, and clarity and charm are not the same target.

  • Many symbol-grid products are used heavily with children, and "for children" in this market has often meant primary colors rather than considered design.

That clinical focus is useful for evaluation and for access needs. It also means few people in the chain were designing for the moment an adult opens the app at a pharmacy counter.
