TypeOut

About TypeOut

TypeOut is an iPhone app for people who can’t speak. You type, and your phone says it out loud; when the other person answers, their words appear on screen as big text. In Chinese it’s called 聆言.

How it started

In July 2026, the developer met a woman who couldn’t speak. To ask a question, she typed it on her phone and turned the screen around for the other person to read.

Looking through the App Store in China afterward, the developer couldn’t find an app that did this well — reading aloud what she typed, and turning the reply into text she could read. TypeOut started there.

What it does

Who it isn’t for

It’s built for people who can read and type. Someone who needs picture symbols — for example, a child who doesn’t read yet — may be better served by a symbol-grid AAC app. It’s also iPhone only for now, requires Sign in with Apple, and works by touch only (no eye-gaze or switch access).

Privacy

No ads and no tracking. Phrases, history, and notes stay on the phone. When you use one of the cloud voices, the sentence passes through our server to the text-to-speech provider and is deleted once it has been synthesized — it isn’t saved in a database or written to logs.
